Each ride-day the Light the Trail team will #Ride4 a victim of suicide to honor and celebrate their life, and to further healthy conversation about this important topic. If there’s someone you’d like us to #Ride4, please visit the #Ride4 page.
September 12, 2017: #Ride4 Army SPC Alan Younger (by Amber Younger)
Tell us about them…
My husband Alan was a brilliant, one of a kind guy. He had a quirky sense of humor and loved to cook. We have a daughter who was 6 when he died by suicide. He was also a Combat Medic and Operation New Dawn veteran and deployed to Iraq.
How has your perspective of depression and suicide shifted over time?
I now view mental illness as no different than a physical illness…however the shame and stigma surrounding mental health and suicide causes people like my husband to suffer in silence.
Is there a particular favorite song or band of theirs, or one you remember them by?
Whenever I hear “Say a Little Prayer For You” by Aretha Franklin I think of Alan.
