September 4th, 2017: #Ride4 “S” (by Annie)
Each ride-day the Light the Trail team will #Ride4 a victim of suicide to honor and celebrate their life, and to further healthy conversation about this important topic. If there’s someone you’d like us to #Ride4, please visit the #Ride4 page.
Today’s submitter requested that we keep her friend’s name private.
Tell us about them…
S didn’t need that much to make him happy. He loved being around people that loved him too – and that was all he needed. We did a theatre type competition together, and he was always the most rock solid member of the team. He was at every practice, did any job, was happy to do anything he needed. He helped me put up flyers when I ran for the Student Council. When my best friend was upset about her boyfriend in high school, and crying outside, he (without saying anything) picked her up, gave her a piggy back ride to his car, and drove her to McDonalds to get a McFlurry.
How has your perspective of depression and suicide shifted?
I’ve always been sensitive to the issues of depression and mental health, and do consider myself an advocate of mental health patients. But S’s passing helped me realize how truly invisible this illness could be. He was always himself, until he wasn’t.
